Social entrepreneurship is becoming an increasingly important force in solving environmental and public health challenges around the world. In Indonesia, entrepreneur and engineer Nuha Anfaresi has been recognized for developing innovative clean water solutions aimed at helping communities affected by pollution and limited access to safe drinking water.
The initiative began in Bangka Island, Indonesia, where mining activities have caused severe environmental degradation and water contamination for many years. Communities living near former mining areas often rely on unsafe water sources for drinking, cooking, and household use. These conditions created serious public health concerns and motivated the development of affordable water treatment technologies.
To address this challenge, Nuha founded AiKite, a social enterprise focused on producing accessible water filtration systems for vulnerable communities. One of the primary innovations developed through the enterprise is the BankSand water filter, which uses modified local sand materials to remove heavy metal contaminants and improve water quality. The solution was specifically designed to be practical and affordable for communities with limited resources.
Recognition from international organizations such as the Sundara Fund’s RISE Fellowship helped expand the project’s visibility and impact. Through mentorship, training, and collaboration with global experts, the initiative strengthened its approach to social business development, sustainability, and community engagement.
The project also focuses heavily on education and local participation. Community members are encouraged to learn about hygiene, sanitation, and environmental protection while participating in the implementation process. Youth and women have also played important roles in supporting outreach programs, awareness campaigns, and operational activities within the social enterprise.
Today, the initiative represents how science, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility can work together to solve real-world problems. By combining innovation with community-centered action, the project continues to improve access to clean water while inspiring young changemakers to develop sustainable solutions for environmental challenges in Indonesia and beyond.
